Celebrate St. Patrick's Day In Southern Wisconsin With This Delicious Non-alcoholic Treat, Irish Soda Bread

Sour buttermilk, flour, salt and sodium bicarbonate, four simple ingredients that saved thousands of Irish families from almost certain starvation during the 19th century potato famine. The soda bread recipe first made its' appearance in the public conscientiousness

in the November 1836 edition of The Farmer's Magazine. The recipe crossed the Atlantic Ocean in the 1840s during the Great Irish Potato famine where the Irish-Americans took the traditional bread in a sweeter direction. The addition of raisins, or currants add nice zing to the classic Irish Soda Bread flavor was actually a derivation of Green Isle's Spotted Dog.
