Mitchell Park Domes Holiday Show

Shrinking budgets, decreases in money received from tax levies over three decades, Milwaukee County parks are facing budget shortfalls, and the Mitchell Park Domes are in the cross hairs.  Parks have not been given priority as a key part of the public commons and were historically considered discretionary spending translation the world famous domes days may be numbered.

But there is still an opportunity to see one of Southern Wisconsin's great cultural treasures and engineering feats the Mitchell Park Domes. The domes existence came coincidentally due to a lack of discretionary funding for building a new facility to replace an aging conservatory built in the 1890s. The Milwaukee Parks Commission had desired the services of the world famous engineer cum designer, Buckminster Fuller but his famous geodesic domes were too expensive to consider. Instead Milwaukee County opted for a competition to design similar structures and architect Donald L. Greib was chosen as the winner for his conoidal glass domes. The three domes (the Floral Show Dome, Tropical Dome and Desert Dome) took eight years to construct. Today, the Mitchell Park Domes stand stoically along the Menominee Valley's southern edge as testament to innovative engineering methods and the beauty created when form follows function.

The Holiday season is one of the best times of the year to visit the Mitchell Park domes. The Floral Show Dome is the setting for many seasonal events and themes, and right now the monumental glass-enclosed space is a wonderland of holiday bedazzled by fragrant pine trees, chrysanthemums, amaryllis, other plants and hundreds of poinsettias of all shades and sizes. Poinsettias a tradition of America's celebration of Christmas are actually native to Mexico and Hondurus. This year's Holiday Show in this time of COVID-19 is also a great way to socially distance and warm up safely indoors as the Mitchell Park Domes requires all visitors to mask up when visiting. And no extra tickets are required for admission to the Holiday Show as it is included with the domes basic admission price. And if that's not enough there is even a contest where you have a chance to win 4 free admission tickets, for free Domes t-shirts and four stickers.
