Vintage Finds Abound As 11 Spring Garage Sales Open Their Doors In Towns Around Southern Wisconsin

April is here. The birds are singing, garage doors are opening up for spring cleaning, and rummage sale season is finally here. Towns across Southern Wisconsin are spilling forth the bountiful riches of living in America

into driveways and sidewalks.

Americans throw away 13 million tons of textiles (about 85 percent of their clothes every year) according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA.) Garages sales are a simple way to live more sustainably and honor the green planet we call home. Event more startling the EPA estimates America's total generation of municipal solid waste (throw away items) in 2018 was 292.4 million tons or 4.9 pounds per person per day! Buying locally vintage items keeps landfills from filling up. Rummage finds are much cheaper than their store counterparts and often constructed well with better materials. When you buy a vintage shirt, or bike from a garage sale the carbon footprint is much smaller than a brand new item which has travelled across the ocean to reach the retail store.

For Southern Wisconsin towns, garage sales or rummage sales are great

ways to bring in tourists for daytrips before the Memorial Day Weekend.

Here are 11 upcoming garage sales happening around our region.

Albany

Darlington

The Darlington City Wide Garage Sales has been a long time Spring fixture in downtown Darlington for over 20 years. This year's garage sale features 40-50 households scattered across the town. With so many participants in city wide sale having a map to guide around town is handy way to make a day of great finds and savings. Maps are available at KC's, area gas stations and Piggly Wiggly. Downtown businesses will be open offering special deals on their merch, Lucky Cow Coffee & Gelato and downtown restaurants will be open extra hours for the weekend long event.

The Darlington City Wide Garage Sales takes place April 26th through the 28th.

Footville

This Friday marks the 45th year of the Footville Rummage Sale, the brainchild of local resident, Georgia Honeysett. Honeysett whose family owned Honeysett's Variety Store in downtown Footville, created and coordinated the original sale keeping it going for several years. The Rummage event has changed few hands, and in last few years has been under the guidance of Teena....Teena has been living in Footville since 1976. Today the Footville Rummage Sale is much more than finding a great lamp or exercise bicycle. Other businesses and organizations in Footville are participating making the weekend sale much more of a carnival or market like. More

Footville Community Rummage Sale Days are April 23-24, rain date Sunday, April 25.

Ft. Atkinson

Citywide Rummage Sale in Fort Atkinson is one of the more popular garage galas in Southern Wisconsin with 111 households participating. Sales will take place throughout the day on Friday through Sunday around downtown.

Johnson Creek

Johnson Creek and regional destination for its' outlet mall will be an even bigger shopper's paradise this April. Big deals are to be found in Johnson Creek during their Community Rummage Sale Weekend

Lake Mills

Maple Bluff

Home to the Wisconsin governor's mansion and some of Madison's more exclusive addresses the Maple Bluff Village Wide Sale is like no other in Southern Wisconsin. The village is not quite a gated community but a neighborhood with a police department. Maple Bluff is a very quiet oasis off Madison's northside road, Sherman Avenue. People attending the sale can safely walk in the middle of residential streets. The items found at garage sales here reflect the residences and people who live in Maple Bluff. If there is one garage sale to mark a calendar for this would be the one to circle with a red pen. Find designer brand clothing, kids toys, bikes and housewares. The main sale takes place May 20th from 8am - 2pm, but some residents may have sales on the 19th.

Monona

Now entering its' 21st year The Monona City Wide Garage Sales takes place across Monona from homes to churches to neighborhood organizations. Rain or shine the sale begins at 8 AM Saturday and Sunday, May 20th through the 21st

Monroe

The Monroe City Wide Garage Sales is returning downtown. The two day, treasure seekers event is put on by the Monroe Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI ) to bring new tourism and promote the great small businesses and attractions in Monroe. The city wide garage sale takes place May 7 through the 8th all day.

Mt. Horeb

Over 100 garage sales in and around at the Mt. Horeb Village Wide Garage Sale April 19 - 22nd. The rummage bonanza is traditionally on the last Friday and Saturday in April.

Oregon

The Oregon Village Wide Garage Sales happen this Thursday, May 11 through Saturday the 13the from 8 am to 4 pm. Oregon is about 9 miles south of Madison, and great place to enjoy a daytrip getaway.

Watertown

Historic Watertown hosts one of the more diverse offerings of garage treasure in Southern Wisconsin. The City Wide Rummage Sale which takes place Saturday, May 14, 2022, 8 am to 4 pm always attracts dozens of participant household from across the town.

Waunakee

Waunakee Garage Sale Days a long standing community tradition takes place Mother's Day Weekend 2023. The garage sales have been taking place for over 20 years, a great way to meet neighbors.
