Southern Wisconsin Pickleball Courts And Events This Summer

More than a decade ago The Edgerton Reporter highlighted a new sport making its' mark in downtown Edgerton with a small group of local devotees and newly transformed tennis court. Since that article first appeared, Pickleball has become not only the fastest growing sport in Wisconsin, the United States but globally. From its' beginnings in a upper-middle class neighborhood on Bainbridge island, WA, the sport's slower pace, ease of use, adaptability, "socialability" has cut across the digital divide and embraces players young and not-so-old, of all skill levels and interest.
And when a fad becomes mainstream it doesn't take long for an entrepreneur to latch onto a trend and try to build a business from it. Pickleball themed entertainment ("eatertainment") complexes are the newest craze. Smash Park first opened in West Des Moines in the fall of 2018, with four pickleball courts inside and two outside. The 27,000-square-foot indoor space houses party games, an arcade, and a 30-foot TV wall, while the 17,000-square-foot outdoor yard area features pickleball courts and other features. The Des Moines based Smash Park recently opened a complex in the Twin Cities in November of 2024.
In 2022 the Sun Times reported that one of the major knocks from the city’s growing pickleball scene is that the city is lightyears behind other major cities in building dedicated courts. Most pickleball in Chicago is played on tennis courts, which can create tension between picklers and tennis players. Most pickleball was played on tennis courts that also had pickleball lines painted on them.
“Chicago (was) light-years behind the rest of the world in the development of pickleball,” said Steven DeMar, the administrator of the Chicago Pickleball Facebook page. Today, the greater Chicagoland area boasts some of the highest pickleball court numbers in the U.S.
From Portage to Eagle River, there is likely a pickleball court near you. According to USPBA in 2024 there were over 240 locations throughout Wisconsin. Not bad when considering neighboring states. 200+ Minnesota, 160 in Iowa, and populated states like Illinois has 320, and 320+ MI respectively. Understand that the location totals for the Badger State reflect the officially sanctioned courts and that the numbers go up every year.
