DR. QUIVEY HOUSE

( 6) Cross the street to arrive at the next destination on our tour one of Evansville’s oldest structures, 103 West Main Street. Built in 1858 for local physician, Dr. William Quivey, this residence is a fine example of Greek Revival architecture. The style derives its’ name from the simple fact that the homes or built resemble a Greek

temple.Note the use of white paint to replicate the appearance of marble. Classic elements of the Greek Revival are the large columns, and massive ornate temple-like roof called a pediment. In the case of Dr. Quivey’s home since the pediment hangs over a porch this space and architectural detail is called a portico.
