Where To Go For A Cream Puff After The Wisconsin State Fair Has Ended

Get Your Cream Puff Fix At These Great

Southern Wisconsin Bakeries

This year (2024) is the 100th year of the Wisconsin State Fair cream puff. The most popular fair snack is sold by the box or individually at a dizzying rate of 100 puff per minute at the height of the fair.  But for those of us that can't get to Milwaukee this week, there are local, 360 day/year alternatives for your cream puff fix.

The cream puff does not have an established back story but the nearest history bakery historians can derive a narrative from is France where the indulgent treat is known as profiterole, or chou à la crème filled French choux pastry ball with a typically sweet and moist filling of whipped cream, custard, pastry cream, or ice cream. And what is more appropriate representative of the "Dairy State" than a cream puff?

Here are just a few great bakeries Lakes Edition discovered in the area. A visit to each place, taste and compare, techniques, and filling, is highly recommended.

Our first stop brings us to Janesville. Taryn's Tempting Treats a local destination for cheesecakes, cinnamon rolls to apple turnovers and cream puffs on demand, just call in a place an order.

If New Glarus is a traditional day trip for the family this time of the year the New Glarus Bakery is likely one of the destinations on your itinerary. The one hundred year old bakery is not just popular with the locals, but regionally, across the state border and beyond. "We receive a lot of calls from customers in Switzerland and Germany who want to ship across the U.S.," says David at the New Glarus Bakery. The bakery serves up traditional items for the holiday like Stollen, Fruit Spritzes (shortbread butter cookie), Lebkuchen, Anise Springerli, and Butter Stars,  But year-round the bakery is a great destination any time of year.  And, you can add cream puffs to the list of delicious options at this historic bakery.  The New Glarus version is custard and buttercream filled, and comes in one size ("the size of a human fist") for $5.75.
