Voluntourism, a popular term in recent years, referring to vacationers wanting to give back to the communities they visit while on vacation. This trend is more popular with tourists visiting economically disadvantaged countries in the Global South. But what about adopting a pet while on vacation?  Consider this a solicitation to action, for reasons spelled out shortly. Fodor's Travel journalist, Lisa Davis speaks about her lovely experience adopting Blanco, a stray she encountered on the beach in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Davis's Blanco whose furry face was featured on several of Lisa's Facebook posts garnered Worldwide following and admiration. And in these times of climate change where weather events like Hurricane Milton are becoming more commonplace, human societies across the U.S. are being swamped by strays and strapped for resources. Many shelters are reducing fees, and like Jefferson County Humane Society are even posting on the adoption portion of their website to "name your price." to encourage people to adopt.  What a lovely way to celebrate and create a memorable vacation, bringing home a furry friend. These dogs are resilient, brave and loving little creatures that endured the horror of a climatic event. The hope is to reunite a dog or cat with their family but often times that is near impossible as homes are washed away, vital contact information is lost.  Read More
