Adopting On Vacation, Bringing A Furry Family

"We have had some adoptions of animals for people who are on vacation!"

says Faith Larson, the Community community Outreach Coordinator, at the Humane Society Of Southern Wisconsin (HSSW). While not an often occurrence families do make the trek to the Janesville based shelter, and "fall in love!" says Larson, "who are we to stop them from taking home a new best friend?"  While the Humane Society wouldn't consider having vacationers volunteer since it requires workers to screen a new volunteer, HSSW does have the Doggy Day Out program which is great way for people to help out.

Doggy Day Out:

HSSW's Doggy Day Out (DDO) is a program aimed at giving shelter dogs a break from their kennels through community-based outings. Animal enthusiasts can turn their compassion into action by taking one of HSSW's shelter dogs on an adventure. These two-hour excursions offer valuable exercise and enrichment for our shelter friends, while also allowing DDO participants to play a role in helping pets go home again! During a DDO outing, participants can introduce, 'show off' the dog to those passing by, and take photos and/or videos to share online. People can apply on the HSSW website here: https://www.petsgohome.org/volunteer-foster/doggy-day-out/

The Adoption Process

Looking to bring a new family member home?

"Our adoption process is laid-back and relaxed! We focus on conversation-based adoption counseling to ensure the best fit for an animal in our care," says Faith.

The first step to adoption is meeting in person with an adoptable animal! Adopters can stop in during our open hours to visit with an adoptable animal they are interested in.  HSSW's adoption counselors will counsel them prior to the meet with any information they have on the animal. If an adopter decided to adopt, it is generally a same-day adoption process unless the pet is waiting for spay/neuter, etc. All of their adoptable pets come spayed/neutered, up to date with age-appropriate vaccinations, microchipped, have been given a flea/tick preventative,

and their first set of deworming.
