Rock River Heritage County Park Is A Forest Oasis Minutes From Downtown Janesville

(photo taken by Lakesedition staff)

Rock River Heritage Park is located northwest of Janesville on the eastern banks of the Rock River. The parcel was originally created in 1946 to provide outdoor recreation, camping, and education for Boy Scouts in Southern Wisconsin. Since that time, the parcel has evolved and developed to now include trails, lodges and cabins, a man-made lake, and many other amenities.

The park was purchased by Rock County in February of 2022 and many improvements have been made, with work continuing.

The 178 forested park is like a well-preserved tribute to a much simpler time when families went outdoors together, phone-free, and breathed and passively observed the beauty and wonder of nature. The dense wooded setting with the classic 1950's era log cabins, it is not hard to imagine seeing Yogi the Bear, or a brown clothed helpful park warden at the ready to help with any questions.

On a warm winter day the Amphitheater with it's shelter and wooden benches absorbs the sun's rays providing a tranquil place of reflection or great spiritual connection, or just a fun space to read a book.
