The U.S. Mixed Doubles Curling Championship 2022 In Middleton

This week 25 curling teams from across the America will compete for the ultimate chance to represent Team USA at the World Mixed Doubles Championship in Geneva Switzerland. Certainly, everyone is familiar with our local heroes Matt and Becca Hamilton, the brother-sister curling duo from McFarland. Matt was on the 2018 U.S. team that ultimately won America's first curling gold medal at the Winter Olympics held in PyeongChang, Korea. The celebrated siblings have teamed up to compete in this year's mixed double championship in Middleton as they had represented our country in the Olympics first ever competition. The two McFarland natives have been playing on the ice since they were kids.

It seems very appropriate that a Wisconsin town would be hosting this week's championship competition.  The Madison Curling Club (based in McFarland) has the 3rd largest number of members in the U.S. Wisconsin alone boasts 28 clubs according to the Wisconsin State Curling Association (WSCA.) The Milwaukee Curling Club founded in 1845 along the banks of  a frozen Milwaukee River is the oldest continuously operating club in America. Curling's rich history which began in 16th Century Scotland has seen an explosion of interest in the U.S. since Team USA captured the gold in Korea. According USA Curling, the sport’s American governing body the number of curlers in U.S. has grown from about 16,000 to 25,000 over the last decade, with about 200 clubs operating across 49 of the 50 states
