Lake Belleview

Back to Fishing Report.

Like numerous 19th century Wisconsin towns Belleville positioned its' economy around agriculture. And as many burgeoning villages dammed a nearby stream to create a mill pond for milling,

Lake Belle View was born out of essentially a mill pond. But unlike other dammed rivers, the people of Belleville decided to free the nearby Sugar River from the legacy of milling and create an entirely new separate but contiguous body of water, Lake Belle View. The engineering feat required to create a independent lake was controversial as the dam is still very much intact. But today the lake solely exists fed by a clear running cold spring.

Lake Belle View is a 44 acre lake located in Dane County. It has a maximum depth of 7 feet. Visitors have access to the lake from a public boat landing. Fish include Panfish, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Walleye and Catfish.

Catch and release fishing on Lake Belle View for largemouth and smallmouth bass is open year round unless otherwise noted. Lake Belle View is a silent sports lake, no motor boats or jet skis permitted..

 About Belleville

Belleville: Lake Belleview is located in the heart of downtown. The popular regional hiking and biking, Badger State Trail traverses through the heart of Belleville with two noteworthy features. The first is an old railroad trestle bridge across the street from the Public Square and linking with an underpass with Lake Belleview. The 2nd noteworthy part of the trail is Belleville's old depot which is rumored to become a Badger State Trail stop featuring a cafe and historic exhibits. Another development, recently completed, is the former Meredith Home/Hotel Belleville, now known as Lofts on the Square affordable apartments for seniors.

What really put Belleville on the international map was a UFO sighting that took place in the late 20th century. The story goes back to an unexplained event that occurred in 1987 in the evening sky just outside Belleville. On the nights of January 15th and 16th between 8:30 p.m. and 3:30 a.m. police officer, Glen Kazmar witnessed the strange phenomena over Quarry Road. Several witnesses have reported similar sightings in the area those two nights. The UFO visitation became a legend and then festival. Every fall the town celebrates that close encounter with UFO Fest.

And then there is Chicago lawyer, Scott Kummer's Ten Junk Mile event every year. Kummer fell in love with the area and decided why not have a not-so-serious runner's race along the Badger State Trail (which bisects the historic square in downtown.) Participants can chose between a  100 MILE, 100K, 50 MILE 50K MARATHON HALF MARATHON All races run along the Badger State Trail continuing onto the Jane Addams Trail between Belleville, WI and Orangeville, IL. The course is 99% rail trail and less than 1% asphalt. For more information visit Kummer's site https://www.tenjunkmilesracing.com/

For a fun downtown/Main Street breakfast eatery stop in at the Lingonberry Llama. Deceptively large from the outside, find breakfast burritos, quiches, even a tuna sandwich in addition to the standard cafe fare like morning specialty drinks and made to order coffee concoctions.
