EAGER HOUSE

( 8) Our last home on the tour is across the street and down one block at 228 West Main Street. A residence built for a Baker Manufacturing Company founder Almeron Eager in 1874 the home is a somewhat unusual example of the Italianate Style. Typically, houses

built in this vernacular have flat roofs like the residence at 143 West Main Street. The Eager home has a few classic Italianate elements present throughout such as the tall narrow rectangular windows with arches. There is also the presence decorative wood trim on the window frames, and deep hanging pediment. Look under the porch roof and note the large brackets or corbels present under the porch roof. Eager was prolific philanthropist and gave large sums of money to organizations and city’s Prairie School Style library at the corner of Church and Main Street.
