Celebrate Labor Day Weekend and Wisconsin's Agricultural Legacy at The Walworth County Fair

Billed as the largest county fair (over 135,000 attendees in 2020) in Wisconsin, Walworth County's Labor Day Weekend fete is hardly showing it's age. At 173 years old, the fair goes enthusiastically beyond the traditional attractions like 4-H agricultural. exhibits, carnival rides and funnel cake. There is no other fair in Wisconsin possibly the Great Lakes region that hosts both honey condiment and bird house building competitions. No need to explain those hand to hand feats of carpentry and culinary genius, other than mention only locally sourced honey is eligible to compete.

There is a also tractor pull competition, a demolition derby and monster trucks. That's right all forms of noise, metal grinding, smoke, and earth churning mayhem in one place at one time.. At the other end of the spectrum there is dog obedience and showmanship demonstrations, There are gift and franchise retail vendors like a mop that can bake bread or vacuum cleaner that reads nihilistic poetry mostly Sartre. The last few parts of that last sentence are not correct.

With Walworth County Fair's reputation comes prestige and that means a big draw for famous acts. What does Elkhorn Wisconsin have in common with Paris, France, Utrecht, Netherlands, and Pretoria, South Africa? Ever heard of the songs like "I want to Know what love is," "Waiting For A Girl Like You," "Hot Blooded," and "Juke Box Hero?" That's right Foreigner is headlining The Walworth County Fair. You can check them out Sunday, September 4th, ticket prices range from $30 to $50. And if you like county fairs chances are you are possibly a fan of country music. One of the biggest Nashville stars is also making a visit to the fair, Phillip George Vassar Jr.. Vassar began his career in the 90s and has written for the likes of Alan Jackson and Tim McGraw.

And going on the cowboy hat wearing theme there are horse exhibitions, pig shows and plenty of impressive acts of commitment and ingenuity on display courtesy of the 4-H. The Walworth County Fair grounds are in close proximity to the site of the very first 4-H club established in Wisconsin over 105 years ago. And keeping with that theme don't forget to thank a farmer this Labor Day Weekend. It is hard to imagine a world without our hard working local farms.
