 Lake Belle View

Not unlike so many Western European settled Wisconsin towns of the 19th century, Belleville positioned its' economy around agriculture. And as many burgeoning villages dammed nearby streams to create a mill pond for milling. Belleville's Lake Belle View was first born out of necessity. But, unlike other dammed rivers, the people of Belleville decided to free the nearby Sugar River from the legacy of milling and create an entirely new separate but contiguous body of water, Lake Belle View. The engineering feat required to create a independent lake was controversial as the dam is still very much intact. But today the lake solely exists thanks a clear running cold spring.

The current, Lake Belle View is a 44 acre lake located in Southern Dane County. It has a maximum depth of 7 feet. Visitors have access to the lake from a public boat landing. Fish include Panfish, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Walleye and Catfish.

Catch and release fishing on Lake Belle View for largemouth and smallmouth bass is open year round unless otherwise noted. Lake Belle View is a silent sports lake, no motor boats or jet skis permitted..

Above photo gallery features scenes from the habitat restoration of wetlands by the Village of Belleville, the Eagle Loop Trail, adjacent to Lake Belle View.

TOWNS NEARBY

Belleville: Lake Belleview is located in the heart of downtown. Main Street which runs east to west borders the southern edge of the lake. And while lingering on Main consider stepping into the newest cute business gracing downtown, the Ligonberry Llama (103 W. Main.) The delightful cafe serves up locally roasted coffee from Rusty Dog, and home made  pastries like the popular Llama tarts,  cinnamon rolls, scones and Llamazing glitter doughnuts

The Badger State Trail traverses through the heart of Belleville with two noteworthy features. The first is an old railroad trestle bridge across the street from the Public Square and linking with an underpass with Lake Belleview.

The 2nd noteworthy aspect of the trail is Belleville's historic train depot which is rumored to become a Badger State Trail stop featuring a cafe and historic exhibits. Across the street from the town's historic square is Belleville's new public library. After a four year, community anchored, fund raising campaign (beginning in 2016) the library broke ground during the COVID-19 pandemic on April 14, 2020.

Another development, recently completed, is the former Meredith Home/Hotel Belleville, now known as Lofts on the Square affordable apartments for seniors.

What really put Belleville on the map was a UFO sighting that took place in the late 20th century. Every fall the town celebrates that close encounter with UFO Fest. Belleville is known as the "UFO capitol of Wisconsin."
